Brian Bourque

Brian is a Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native who began as an assistant coach with the Warriors during the 2003-04 season and now is in his 18th season as head coach. Since taking over as head coach the team has earned an overall record (regular season and playoffs) of 248-183-37-5 and guided the Warriors to the 2013 University Cup (CIS Championship), their first since 1996. In 2018 Bourque became the winningest bench boss in program history. 

In 2007 and 2010 Brian was named the OUA coach of the year and University of Waterloo’s coach of the year. Brian also has two bronze medals in coaching roles at the World University Games.  In 2011 Brian won bronze with team Canada as the general manger and then in 2017 he won another bronze as the associate coach/GM at the FISU Games played in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

In 2015 Brian was named Associate Director, Athletics and continues to remain in both positions.  The Associate Director role is largely built around leading the varsity athletics component of the department of Athletics and Recreation.  In that role Brian has played an integral part in building student-athletes supports such as strength and conditioning, peer mentorship, and mental performance training.

Brian began coaching with the Dartmouth Midget AAA (NSMHL) program and went onto coach with York University (OUA) and the Newmarket Hurricanes (OPJHL) prior to joining the Warriors. Brian graduated with Bachelor of Physical Education and Bachelor of Education degrees from Dalhousie in 1995 and earned a Masters of Kinesiology in Coaching from York University in 2001.

Brian currently holds Advanced II certification in the Hockey Canada/NCCP certification program. Brian spent ten years teaching public school from kindergarten to grade 12 as a math and physical education teacher before accepting the position with the Warriors. Brian currently resides in Waterloo with his wife, Lisa, and their four daughters, Kennedy, Maddy, Emma, and Chelsey.
