Troy Stevenson

Biography

I grew up in Oakville, Ontario. 1 of 5 white children, in an area that was predominately white. We have a very close family friend who is a strong black woman (you should hear some of her stories as a principle in the Peel region). She treats my brothers and sister like we are her own. Birthday parties, vacations, family dinners, etc., she is a big part of my life.

The high school I went to was well known for being diverse, which was very rare for Oakville at the time. Growing up playing basketball and football, I never really thought twice about who my friends were, nor understood that they were being marginalized. The recent Black Lives Matter movement has forced me to open my eyes and realize my ignorance. I can honestly say, I was unaware of my privilege and the injustices that are constantly occurring to my community, friends and family. I want to do better.

I hope that being an avid member of the Alliance will allow me to grow personally, but more importantly allow me to understand what I can do to support black members of our team, university and community.
