Student-Athlete Mentor

Job Title: Student-Athlete Mentor Department: Athletics and Recreation
Pay: Honorarium Position $500.00, split over 2 terms
Reports to: Student-Athlete Team Lead Coordinator, Avery Kelly, athcoord@uwaterloo.ca
Effective Date: September 1, 2022 – April 28, 2023 (Orientation will be held in August)

About the Program:
At the University of Waterloo, Athletics and Recreation hosts a student-athlete support group that creates a community to connect knowledgeable upper year student-athletes with a small group of first year student-athletes. Upper year mentors will form professional peer to peer relationships and assist first year student-athletes with their university transition. The goal of the mentor is to create a safe community for their first year student-athletes by providing opportunities to build a support network, increase their knowledge around academic strategies, athletic eligibility, varsity specific resources and campus resources to help them be successful throughout their time at the University of Waterloo.

About the Role:
There will be a mandatory training session for all successful candidates during August for half a day. Successful candidates must also complete the Mental Health Awareness training online, and receive a certificate of completion. Successful candidates will work an average of 2 hours a week.

Duties:
  • Oversee approximately 10-15 first year student-athletes
  • Help students in becoming familiar with topics regarding campus resources, academic strategies, athletic eligibility requirements, varsity specific resources and health/wellness
  • Check-in with your group of first year students through a UWaterloo email account weekly, and respond to emails within 24 hours 
  • Create and manage a social media networking community for your group of studentathletes (e.g., Teams, WhatsApp, Remind, Facebook, etc.)
  • Coordinate, attend, and help to facilitate events for your group of first year studentathletes
  • Assist in the facilitation of the orientation presentation and inform your group of first year student-athletes of campus and departmental activities/workshops
  • Attend meetings with the Team Lead Coordinator
  • Submit tracking forms to the Team Lead Coordinator
Responsibilities:
  • Report all issues/concerns and pertinent information regarding your student-athlete(s) immediately to the Student-Athlete Team Lead Coordinator and/or appropriate professionals
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with your group of first year studentathletes
  • Keep all information shared between you and your student(s) confidential (unless issues discussed place the individual or other individuals at risk)
  • Recognize boundaries within your role and refer students to the appropriate resources when necessary
Qualifications:
  • Possess excellent communication skills, online (e.g., email) and in person
  • Must be a full or part-time registered (including co-op) student in good academic standing at time of hire
  • Must possess strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines
  • Must be enrolled as a student-athlete for the 2022-2023 academic year 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professionalism in all settings
  • Must have knowledge of University of Waterloo Athletic Department and studentathlete initiatives (e.g., health, nutrition, doping, athletic eligibility, varsity specific resources etc.)
  • Experience working with other student-athletes in one-on-one settings (e.g., mentoring) would be an asset
