KINGSTON, Ont. - U SPORTS have announced the All-Canadians for the 2023 football season prior to the Vanier Cup this Saturday. 

Tyson Hergott (Waterloo, ON/) has been named an All-Canadian for the 2023 football season, following one of the best seasons by a Warrior defensive end in recent U SPORTS history. 

Waterloo's Tyson Hergott (Waterloo, ON/) emerged as a dominant force in the 2023 season, bagging the J.P. Metras Award as OUA's lineman of the year. Hergott's imposing presence on the field made him a nightmare for opposing offences. His contribution was instrumental in helping the Warriors secure a spot in the postseason. 

The Waterloo native showcased his potential by recording five sacks over two games during the mid-season stretch. Hergott's innate ability to get to the quarterback and disrupt the opposition's backfield was the highlight of his impressive performance this season. He finished the year with 11 sacks, which was the second-highest in the OUA, and 14 tackles for a combined loss of 103 yards. Besides these, he made 38 total tackles, out of which 30 were solo tackles. 

Hergott's season was made even better by the three forced fumbles, an interception, and two pass breakups he recorded. With his 2023 season being his best so far, Hergott is a two-time recipient of the Gary Boug Memorial Football Excellence Award. He joined a group of three other Warriors to win the J.P. Metras Award and is the first black and gold player to do so since 2006.

Hergott is the first Waterloo Warrior to receive an All-Canadian nod since the 2021-2022 football season when Tre Ford was awarded the prestigious Hec Crighton Trophy and named First Team All-Canadian. Tyrell Ford and Cole Crossett (Metcalfe, ON/) were recognized in the same season with Second Team All-Canadian honours.
