After starting off 2023 with two close home losses to two of the top teams in the country, Waterloo rebounded with a pair of massive road wins this past weekend to improve to 9-3 on the season.
Up first was the Western Mustangs. In an always tough building to play, Waterloo jumped out to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter and did not look back, cruising to a 72-51 victory thanks to a very solid fourth quarter performance. The Warriors went to the line 22 times in the victory, knocking down 17 of those attempts.
Leading the way for the black and gold was
Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/)Â who had a double-double putting up 18 points while adding 11 rebounds. She also collected five assists in the win.
Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) was next best with 16 points while
Summer Pahl (Kitchener, ON/) and
Maddy Adams (Drumbo, ON/) rounded out Waterloo's attack, each with 13 points. Adams and Pahl were also massive on the boards with 14 and 13 boards respectively. As a team, Waterloo out rebounded the Mustangs 49 to 37.
On Saturday, Waterloo was in tough against another strong home team in the Windsor Lancers. Playing in their new facility for the first time, Waterloo's stingy defence was on display again while they did just enough on offence to secure a 55-50 victory. Hughes was clutch down the stretch making several big shots while finishing with 21 points going 7-for-14 from the field with three 3-pointers made. Pahl was also in double digits with 10 points while
Beth Howlett (Burlington, ON/) had seven. Overeem was big on the glass once again with a game high 12 rebounds.Â
Waterloo will look to win their third straight on Friday night when they welcome the 9-2 Guelph Gryphons to the PAC before they meet once again on Saturday in Guelph.Â
