The Warriors scored 32 second half points and held McMaster to just 29 total as the black and gold cruised past the Marauders 50-28 on Wednesday night at the PAC. With the win the Warriors improved to 6-5 on the season to sit fifth in the OUA West standings.
McMaster did not reach double digits in any of the four quarters as the Warriors defence swarmed the Marauders all game long.Â
"We've been emphasizing our team defence as one of our anchors this year," said head coach
Jessica Roque. "As a collective, I felt we had our most cohesive game. The level of trust on the floor is certainly growing and the results are showing."
The stingy defence from the Warriors allowed their offence to get going. After scoring just four points in the opening quarter, Waterloo came back with 13 in the second to take an 18-12 lead into the break.
Waterloo's defence again came out strong in the second half, causing turnovers and forcing the visitors to make poor shots. The Warriors would hold McMaster to just 16 points in the second quarter to easily earn their sixth win of the season.
Leading the Warriors in scoring was
Maddy Adams (Drumbo, ON/) who went 6-for-11 from the field for 12 points while also leading all players on the glass with 11 boards.
Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) was next with 11 points and five rebounds while
Beth Howlett (Burlington, ON/) put up 10 points while adding three rebounds and three assists. Rounding out Waterloo's attack was
Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) who finished with five points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal.
As a team Waterloo outrebounded the Marauders 51-30 while McMaster struggled mightily from three point land going 1-for-30 on the night.
Waterloo will finish off their home and home with McMaster on Friday night in Hamilton.
