The Warriors women's curling team came away with the 2022 OUA silver medal after a hard fought extra end loss to crosstown rivals Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday afternoon at the Westmount Golf and Country Club.
The Warriors played host to 14 other OUA school's after the lengthy pause due to the pandemic and the black and gold did not disappoint going 3-1 in pool play and then earned two convincing victories in the quarter and semifinal matches. In the OUA quarter's Waterloo got past McMaster 9-4 and followed it up with a clean match in the semifinals taking out Brock by a score of 8-2 to setup the Battle of Waterloo for Gold.
The Gold Medal match was executed as well as the Warriors could have hoped for as they allowed only multiple points in one end. With the score 4-2 in favour of the Hawks in the seventh,
Katie Ford (Niagara Falls/) threw her final rock up against three Laurier stones and made a perfect tap back to secure the single making it a one point deficit into the final end.
In the final end, Ford again made a nice shot around her own guards forcing Laurier skip Isabelle Ladouceur into a tough knockout. Ladouceur would miss the shot giving Waterloo the steal of one to send the game into an extra end with the score tied at 4. In the extra, Ladouceur again had similar shot, this time making it to give her Golden Hawks squad the 5-4 win.
Both teams battled hard and it was a very fitting end to an outstanding championship event at Westmount. Congratulations to
