Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Battle Tested! Warriors grind out two straight Battle of Waterloo victories

The Warriors women's basketball team earned two impressive and important victories over crosstown rivals Laurier to move to 5-3 on the season.

On Wednesday night at the Athletic Complex, the Warriors put up 18 points in both of the opening quarters to take a comfortable 36-21 lead into half. The Warriors were able to hold off a late push from the Hawks to secure a 61-52 win.

Beth Howlett (Burlington, ON/) led the way with 15 points thanks to a perfect night at the free thrown line (8-for-8). Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) and Mackenzie Obermayer (Hanover, ON/) were also in double digits with 13 and 12 points respectively while Obermayer had a strong night on the boards with nine. Hughes was also clutch on the glass with seven rebounds while Jaime Newell (Brussels, ON/) had six. The Warriors shot an impressive 84.2% from the charity stripe while out rebounding the Hawks 46-31 in the victory.

On Friday, the Warriors gutted out a much different game but got the result they wanted with a 42-41 win on Carl Totzke Court at the PAC. Scoring only 12 first half points, Waterloo had a much better second half including 19 points in the final quarter to earn the come from behind win.

Hughes (16 points) and Howlett (14) combined for 30 points in the win while Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) and Maddy Adams (Drumbo, ON/) each had 10 rebounds. The Warriors once again dominated the boards with 52 to Laurier's 33.

The Warriors improved to 5-3 on the season with the two Battle of Waterloo wins, good for a tie for fourth in the OUA West. The black and gold will be tested once again this coming week with a home and home against the top OUA team Brock who is a perfect 9-0 on the season. Wednesday, the two will go at it in St. Catharines before returning to the PAC on Saturday for a 4pm tilt.
