The Waterloo Warriors Nordic Ski Team traveled to Sault Saint Marie to compete in the 2020 OUA Championships hosted by the Algoma Thunderbirds and Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club at Hiawatha Highlands (February 21-23). A total of 8 Warriors (4 women, 4 men) competed in the three events held over three days racing. In total, 11 different universities were represented. The weekend's events included a 10km interval start skate ski race on Friday, a 15km interval start classic ski race on Saturday and a 3x5km relay on the final day of the Championships.
Kate Granstrom (Revelstoke/) led the way for the Warriors women's team with two top 25 finishes on Friday and Saturday (23rd, 17th) during her first season as a Warrior. Granstrom acted as the teams anchor for the team relay on Sunday.
Claudia De Fazio (Barrie/), also as first-year athlete with the team, had a strong performance over the weekend, finishing in 36th on Saturday and 27th on Sunday.
Emiko Arai (Oakville) (41st, 42nd) and
Lauren Denstedt (Listowel/) (43rd, 46th) also represented the Waterloo Warriors over the weekend.
Isaac Alexander-Cook (Ottawa/) completed his final season with the WWarriors, leading the team with a finish of 29th and 32nd on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Aleksi Luoma (Waterloo/) was close behind in both races with a placing of 33rd and 43rd.
Jason Connelly (Dundas/) (67, 55) and
Christian Filan (Etobicoke/) (65, 61) also represented the Warriors over the weekend.
The Carleton Ravens brought home gold on both the men's and women's sides. The Lakehead Thunderwolves earned silver and the Nipissing Lakers took the bronze. The Waterloo Warriors finished in 8th place in both the women's and men's overall standings for the weekend.
