Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors put forth two gutsy efforts against top OUA teams

They may not have gotten the W's but after two close weekend losses against top OUA teams, women's basketball certainly gained respect around the league.

On Friday night, the Warriors went toe-to-toe against the defending national champions, McMaster (13-7) dropping the game by just one point, on a flukey game winning shot from Sarah Gates. It was a total team effort with four Warriors hitting double digts.

Waterloo shot an incredible 52.2% from 3-point land, knocking down 12 of 23 from beyond the arc compared to just five made three's from the Marauders.

Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton/) led the way with 19 points, going 7-for-11 from the field with five 3-pointers. Beth Howlett (Burlington/) was also on her game with 17 points, seven coming from the free throw line. Aphia Ward (Beaumont, AB/) and Azaliah Colquhoun (Cambridge/) were the other two in double digits with 13 and 11 points respectively. On the glass, Maddy Adams (Drumbo/) finished with a game high nine rebounds while Viktoria Cubelic (St. Catharines/) had seven.

On Saturday afternoon as part of Fatastic Alumni Day, Waterloo went in to half behind by nine against the 16-4 Brock Badgers but outscored them 24-15 in the third quarter to take a two point lead into the fourth. Unfortunately the Warriors could not contain Brock in the fourth, as the vistiting Badgers took it by a score of 73-62.

Howlett had another strong game with 15 more points while Syndey Wilson and Cubelic each had nine. Cubelic and Adams led the way on the boards with six rebounds each.

The Warriors will close out their second next weekend with a pair of home games, first on Friday against Windsor followed by Saturday with a Battle of Waterloo against Laurier. Both games start at 6pm.
