Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton/) put up 18 points as the Warriors earned an impressive 70-65 Battle of Waterloo victory on Wednesday night at the Laurier Athletic Complex.
Hughes went 6-for-15 from the field including a game high five 3-pointers as the black and gold won their opening game of 2020 and have picked up victories in two of their last three contests.
"It was a solid team effort against a well-coached Laurier squad," said Head Coach
Eddie Lopez. "We executed well in transition to find our shooters in the second half. I am proud of the group for earning a positive outcome."
It was an impressive third quarter that secured the win as the Warriors outscored the Golden Hawks 20-6. Laurier came back to outscore Waterloo 24-18 in the fourth but the Warriors held enough of a lead to hang on for the win.
Two other Warriors reached double digits as
Sydney Wilson (Guelph/) and
Viktoria Cubelic (St. Catharines/) each hit 10 points. Wilson did most of her damage from the line going 6-for-10 while Cubelic had a very efficient night going 3-for-4 from the field while hitting four free throws including two clutch ones down the stretch. Cubelic also led the way on the boards with nine rebounds, all on the defensive side.
Maddy Adams (Drumbo/) and
Beth Howlett (Burlington/) rounded out Waterloo's offence with nine points each.
The Warriors are back to the PAC this Saturday as they take on the Guelph Gryphons at 1pm. Catch the game live on OUA.tv.
