Women's basketball dropped their 2019-20 season opener in London on Saturday night as the Western Mustangs used a quick start and strong finish to top the Warriors 74-51.
Western jumped out to a 20-11 lead after the opening quarter but the Warriors bounced back to win the second quarter, 17-12. From the third quarter on, Western took over to cruise to the finish line.
Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton/) had a solid start to her sophomore year with 17 points while
Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford/) had nine.
Megan Goar (Waterloo/) tallied seven off the bench while
Meghan Sharp (Kitchener/) chipped in with six. Rookie forward
Viktoria Cubelic (St. Catharines/) had a nice start to her career with 10 boards while Goar also had 10 rebounds.
Elizabeth Leblanc led the Mustangs with 17 points while Maddy Horst had 14 in the win.
Waterloo will continue their five game road trip to open the season, next weekend in the Nations Capital with games against Carleton and Ottawa. Both tip-offs scheduled for 6pm.
