Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong defensive effort unable to propel Warriors

Despite holding the Windsor Lancers to under 30% shooting, including just 12.5% from beyond the arc, the Warriors lost to the Lancers by a score of 58-37 on Friday night.

The Warriors held the Lancers' starters to only 2 points to start the game, and trailed by only 1 after Caitlin MacLeod (Mississauga/) made a scooping layup late in the quarter. Having relied on her bench to do most of the heavy lifting, Chantal Vallée brought her starters back onto the floor and extended the lead to 14-9 after 10 minutes of play.

Scoring was a struggle for both teams in the 2nd quarter, as they combined for only 15 points.  The Warriors defense was both busy and tenacious, holding the Lancers to only 20.5% shooting despite giving up 11 offensive rebounds. A last-second layup by WIndsor's Olivia Osamusali gave the Lancers a 21-17 lead at halftime.

At the start of the third quarter, Sydney Wilson (Guelph/) drove to the paint multiple times to spark the Warriors offense, making three trips to the line and tacking on 5 of her team-high 13 points. However, the 3rd quarter was ultimately all about Windsor's Emily Prevost. The Montreal native scored all but two of the Lancers' field goals in the stanza, tallying 9 of her 15 points in that 10-minute span. After rebounding a missed three by Waterloo's Hilary Ferguson (Cambridge/), Windsor's Eve Uwayesu travelled down the floor to make a bucket as the 3rd quarter ended, extending the Lancers' lead to 41-28.

The Warriors were plagued by fouls and turnovers to start the 4th quarter, hitting the bonus after only 2 minutes and 36 seconds of play. Despite only scoring three field goals, the Lancers had 17 points in the 4th, leading to a 58-37 loss for the Warriors.

Sydney Wilson (Guelph/) led the Warriors with 13 points, including going 9-for10 from the free throw line. Caitlin MacLeod (Mississauga/) added 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in the loss. Windsor's Emily Prevost had a game-high 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Warriors will fly to Thunder Bay for their next two games, a weekend doubleheader against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on January 19 and 20. After flying back to Waterloo, the Warriors will then play the Laurier Golden Hawks at home on January 26.
