It wasn't the home opening game the Warriors had hoped for as the powerhouse Queen's Gaels paid a visit to the lower CIF Field on Sunday afternoon in a 71-17 loss but the black and gold showed some positive signs against the winner of the last four OUA Championships.
The Gaels led from start to finish but Waterloo put together a strong 15 minutes of action late in the contest scoring 10 of their 17 points.
Rookie back
Mitch Voralek (Waterloo) lived up to the hype with a try midway through the opening half and a converted kick. He was also a catalyst for much of Waterloo's offence in the game. Other Warriors contributing were
Peter Squire (Port Perry/Uxbridge) and
Paul Hummel (Fergus), each tallying a try.
Leading the way for Queen's was Kainoa Lloyd who punched in four tries while Eric Underwood ran in for three.
Waterloo will now turn their attention to September 10 when they welcome Laurier for black and gold day at Warrior Field. Over 3,500 Warrior fans are expected to pack into the stands and berm.
