Hawks run past Warriors in Battle of Waterloo

Box Score

The young Waterloo Warriors football team just couldn't keep up to the nation's leading rusher in the battle of Waterloo.

Laurier running back Eric Guiltinan ran for 176 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Golden Hawks claimed the crosstown title with a 68-7 win on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.

The combination of Laurier's dominant run game and stout defence was deadly for the Warriors, as the Hawks outgained the visitors 440-17 on the ground for the game. Backup running back Levondre Gordon also added 86 yards and a touchdown on just five carries.

The win keeps the fifth-ranked Golden Hawks perfect on the season, with a 4-0 record. Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 0-5 as they continue to develop a roster made up primarily of first- and second-year players.

True freshman Ethan Belbeck (Hamilton) got his first start for Waterloo, subbing in for injured starting QB Lucas McConnell (Waterford). Belbeck went 7-19 for 103 yards and an interception. Third-stringer AJ Stewart (Ridgeway) came in late and was able to put a few plays together, going 3-5 for 93 yards and a touchdown.

A pair of receivers also had big days for Waterloo, as rookie Tyler Ternowski (Hamilton) caught 4 balls for 133 yards and a touchdown, while Andam Felinczak added 6 catches for 98 yards.

Lucas Merlin (Burlington) led a busy Warriors defence with 10 solo tackles and 11 overall. Brandon Corelli (Sault Ste. Marie) chipped in with 9 tackles (all solo) while linebacker Kurtis Gray (Waterloo) added 5.5 tackles.

The Warriors will now return home in search of their first win of the season when the host the 1-3 Queen's Gaels on Saturday, October 1. Kickoff from Warrior Field is slated for 1pm.
