Box Score The Waterloo Warriors had their most successful offensive day of the season on Saturday afternoon's matinee with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Unfortunately for the black and gold, it wasn't enough for their first victory of 2016.
Blues quarterback Marcus Hobbs outdueled Waterloo's Lucas McConnell (Waterford), and Toronto used a balanced attack to defeat the Warriors 38-7 in the black and gold's final road game of 2016.
Hobbs went 15-26 for 348 yards and a touchdown, while adding 25 yards and another touchdown on the ground. Verrick Ponder also scampered for 59 yards and a score for the Blues, who finish at 2-6, while receiver Rahul Madan caught 9 balls for 186 yards and a touchdown.
The Warriors fall to 0-7 on the year despite a good showing from the McConnell-led offense – he completed 16 of 33 passes for 328 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Tyler Ternowski (Hamilton) caught 4 passes for 29 yards and a touchdown, but McConnell's most productive receiver was an unfamiliar face on the offensive side of the ball – defensive back Jordan Hoover (Sault Ste. Marie) had two receptions for 108 yards, including a 70-yard bomb late in the game that set up the Warriors' only major score of the day.
Lucas Merlin (Burlington) led the way defensively with 7.5 tackles (7 solo). Rookie linebacker Kurtis Gray (Waterloo) added 6 solo tackles, while Brandon Corelli (Sault Ste. Marie) notched his 2nd sack of the year. the Warriors also got an interception from linebacker Paul Kaija (Sarnia), his first of the season.
The Warriors will now wrap their season up next Saturday, October 22, when they host the Carleton Ravens. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm at Warrior Field.
