The Warrior men's rugby team put forth a gutsy effort against the top OUA men's rugby program on Sunday when they took on the Queen's Gaels. Despite the lopsided 76-14 loss the Warriors fought until the bitter end scoring their most points against Queen's since they notched 17 back in 2010.
The Gaels were led by Ben Oppenheimer who tallied a game high 15 points on his three tries while Marc Levin and Jeff MacDonald each had two tries. Alex Colborne did most of his damage with his leg, knocking through five converts for 10 points.
The Warriors were led by
Mike Annells (Northwich) who scored the lone first half try while Mike Phillips showed off his breakaway speed in the dying minutes of the game beating the Gaels defenders on the near side for the try.
The Phillips' run showed that the Warriors were never quitting and the black and gold will take that momentum into their next contest when they host Brock on Saturday, September 26 at the lower CIF fields. Rounding out Waterloo's offensive punch in the game was
Paul Schroeder (New Dundee) with two successful converts for four points.
