Box Score It was a mirror image game from last week's loss to Queen's, as the Warriors found themselves down 18-0 at half to the York Lions and could not recover falling 23-14 on Saturday at Warrior Field. The Lions improve to 1-3 on the season while Waterloo dropped to 0-4.
It was a penalty filled affair with the two teams combining for 387 penalty yards on 41 penalties. Waterloo accumulated 413 offensive yards compared to York's 347 but the Lions made up for it with 23 first downs compared to Waterloo's 17.
The Lions scored 18 straight first half points on two running touchdown's by Jesse Amankwaa (9 and 4 yard runs) and a 33-yard field goal by Nick Taylor.
Waterloo came out a new team in the second half with inspired defence by
Christian Mahler (Sault Ste. Marie) and
Brendan Conway (Burlington) to keep the Warriors within striking distance.
Lucas McConnell (Waterford) would answer the call on the last offensive play of the third quarter, throwing a screen pass to
Mitch Kernick (Elmira) who did the rest running 93-yards down field for the touchdown to make the score 20-7 in favour of York. The major was setup by Mahler's interception, his first of two in the contest.
On the ensuing kickoff Waterloo held their momentum as York would fumble the ball in their endzone giving the Warriors their eighth point. York would however come back down the field five minutes later and Nick Taylor would split the uprights for his second field goal of the game to make it 20-8 for the visitor's.
The never-say-die Warriors continued to look for ways to throw off the Lions defence and they would do just that on some trickery late in the fourth. McConnell lateralled the ball to
Blair McKay (Waterford) who tossed it back to McConnell and the second year quarterback found a wide open
Lam Diing (Kitchener) in the endzone for the touchdown making it 23-14 for York. That is as close as the Warriors would come as time would run out on the home side.
Defensively the Warriors were led by Conway who had 7.5 tackles on the afternoon while Corelli had seven. For the Lions Hussein Hazime led the way with his 7.5 tackles.
Offensively, McConnell went 12-for-33 with 296 yards while York's Brett Hunchak went 15-for-26 with 198 yards. On the ground is where York did most of their damage as Amankwaa ran for 131 yards on 24 touches while Waterloo's
Ryan Di Risio (Burlington) had a solid game with 116 rushing yards.
Mitch Kernick (Elmira) had a breakout game for the Warriors in the air making six catches for 153 yards.
Adam Felinczak (Hamilton) (pictured) was second best with 85 receiving yards.
Waterloo will now enjoy the bye week before returning to Warrior Field for their Reunion game against Laurier on October 3 at 1pm.
