Campbell leads Hawks past Warriors in Reunion game

Box Score

After losing their starting quarterback in their second offensive series of Saturday's game versus the Waterloo Warriors, the Laurier Golden Hawks offense became decidedly one-dimensional. But when that dimension was the reigning OUA MVP, it was all the Hawks needed.

Running back Dillon Campbell rushed 31 times for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns, and the Hawks spoiled Waterloo's Reunion weekend with a 42-0 win over the Warriors on a windy and wet afternoon at Warrior Field.

The elements were problematic for the Warriors all day, as quarterback Lucas McConnell (Waterford) was only able to complete 7 of his 32 attempts for 76 yards on the day. The Warriors mustered just 98 total yards of offense, compared to 473 from the Hawks.

Laurier improved to 2-3 on the season, while the Warriors fell to 0-5. Campbell's monster afternoon was also an historic one, as he became the Golden Hawks' all-time career rushing leader.

The game was marred by a series of injuries to standouts on both sides. After Laurier quarterback James Fracas left early in the first quarter, the Warriors lost linebacker Greg Zaitz (Ancaster) shortly thereafter. Then, later in the opening quarter, receiver and part-time punter Mitch Kernick (Elmira) scrambled for 25 yards and a first down on a fake punt, but limped off the field and didn't return.

But throughout the injury-filled rivalry, the only constant was Campbell. He scored runs of 2 yards and 15 yards in the first quarter, and on a 29-yard scamper early in the third to put the game out of reach.

Cornerback Christian Mahler (Sault Ste. Marie) was a bright spot on Waterloo's special teams, blocking two punts on the day. Fellow defensive back Jordan Hoover (Sault Ste. Marie) also had a big afternoon, registering his team-leading third interception of the season.

The Warriors will now head back out on to the road for the first time in nearly a month, when they face the McMaster Marauders next Saturday.
