Lancers snap Warriors three game winning streak

Box Score It was a game of few chances which made every opportunity crucial to take advantage of. The Warriors, who came into the match with a three-game winning streak, were looking to avenge a 2-1 loss they suffered to these same Lancers on Sept 21. Guilia Barile had the lone goal for Windsor in the 14th minute to give the Lancers the 1-0 victory. Lesia Bandura (Kitchener) made 3 saves in goal for the Warriors.

The Warriors and Lancers battled on a very chilly Wednesday evening in what was a tight, defensive matchup for both squads. Tara Butterworth (Waterloo) got the first opportunity for the black and gold in the 7th minute on a low, hard shot but it was turned away by Windsor goalkeeper Krystin Lawrence.

Barile would open the scoring for Windsor in the 14th minute when she made a fabulous strike from the 22-yard line that sailed over top of Bandura to break the deadlock. Shortly after, the Windsor offence would nearly get their second of the game but the shot would glance off a Waterloo defender to go for a corner kick which did not result in an opportunity.

Bandura had to be called on throughout this game to make timely saves and did that in the 19th minute against a speedy Lancers striker who looked poised to double up on the lead.

Warriors' athlete of the week Melanie Mitchell (Glen Morris) had the best chance for the Warriors in the half as she rose up for a head-ball off a corner kick but Lancers' Lawrence was equal to the take. The teams went into the break seeing Windsor lead by a score of 2-1.

Mitchell continued to generate the most offence in the second half for the Warriors, stuttering around defenders but continued to be thwarted by the Lancers goalkeeper.
Co-captain Adrienne Goldsworthy (Waterloo) would send a teasing ball through the 6-yard box in the 55th minute but no Warriors could connect on the end of the cross. Warriors' co-captain Kiersten Colbran (Sarnia) also mustered a great opportunity off a corner kick but the ball sailed just wide of the goal.

Rough play was evident throughout this contest as Victoria Borys (Kitchener) received her first yellow card for a tackle in the 63rd minute and received her second yellow of the match in the 77th minute to send her team down to 10 men for the final stages of the second half.

Windsor would not look back and hold on to a 1-0 victory off the goal by Bartile. The Warriors were seemingly the better team and generated more opportunities; however, they could not get one by the Lancers goalkeeper in their last home game of the season.

The Warriors have only one day off as they will travel to play Laurier on Friday at 6pm at University Stadium and will try to fight to get into the playoffs.
