Warriors can’t capitalize on early momentum, fall to Gryphons 46-17

The Waterloo Warriors lost to the Guelph Gryphons 46-17 this afternoon on a chilly afternoon. The Warriors opened up with the first 10 points of the match but Guelph's offence picked up and scored plenty. Kyle Kraemer (St. Clements) scored a try for the Warriors while Sang Joon (Jason) Park (Mississauga) scored a penalty goal and a convert in the loss. The Warriors fall to 1-5 on the season.

The black and gold started off strong by controlling the ball and moving the ball around the Gryphons back line. Kraemer made a surging run for the home squad before forcing Guelph to take a penalty. Park would score the penalty goal to put the Warriors ahead 3-0 early.

The Warriors would quickly get the ball back into the opposition territory but came up just short on the goal line. After five repeated attempts to break the Guelph defensive line, the always reliable Kraemer punched through the area to give the Warriors an 8-0 lead. Park scored the convert to go ahead 10-0.

The momentum shifted shortly after when Guelph quickly responded when McLeod rushed up the center of the pitch for a try. Newman scored on the convert to shorten the gap to 10-7 in the 23rd minute.

Gryphons would respond immediately after with another try off solid ball movement to give Guelph their first lead at 12-10. Damianff would score his first try of the game minutes later to go ahead 17-10 heading into the half time break.

Guelph would pick up where they left off in the second half with McLeod punching in a try for his second of the game to go ahead 22-0. After a successful convert, a strong run from Bouille pushed the score to 29-10.

Waterloo would add a try and convert late courtesy of Park but it was too little too late. The Gryphons wouldn't look back, adding three more tries and a convert en route to a decisive 46-17 victory.

Waterloo slips to 1-5 on the season and will return home next Saturday when they host RMC at CIF for a 1pm kick off.
