Women's soccer lose back to back nail biters

Friday, Sept. 28
Laurier 1, Waterloo 0

Game Summary

The No. 5 ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer team remained undefeated on Friday night thanks to a 1-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors who fall to 2-6-1 on the season.

The win was Laurier's second straight shutout, and the Golden Hawks haven't allowed a goal in five of their nine games. Katrina Ward of Surrey, B.C. stepped in to start in net for the Hawks, and recorded her first shutout of the season.

The teams were unable to solve each other in a scoreless first half, despite the Hawks putting two good shots on net. In the second half, rookie Kayleigh Bell of Waterloo, Ont., scored her first career goal, and it turned out to be the only offence the Hawks needed, as they cruised to a 1-0 victory.

The three points mean that Laurier has now stretched their lead in the OUA West standings to six points over the second place Western Mustangs. Waterloo remains in seventh; one point back of UOIT for the sixth and final playoff spot meaning tomorrow's game wit the Ridgebacks will be immense.

Saturday, Sept. 29
UOIT 1, Waterloo 0

Game Summary

The Waterloo women's soccer team dropped a crucial game to the UOIT Ridgebacks 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.  A win would have propelled the Warriors past UOIT for the sixth and final playoff spot; instead Waterloo fall to 2-7-1 and find themselves four points out of the playoff picture.  The Ridgebacks improved to 3-4-2 on the season and sit in sixth in the OUA west with 11 points.

Sierra Bulger (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the match at the 66th minute to give Ridgebacks the all-important victory.

Warrior keeper Lesia Bandura (Kitchener/) stopped five of six shots faced in the loss while Ridgebacks goalie Melissa Linton (Cobourg, Ont.) was less busy, only facing two shots for the shutout.

Waterloo travel to Hamilton next Saturday to face the McMaster Marauders on Saturday afternoon.  The black and gold then face Brock in St. Catharines on Sunday before returning home for four straight home games to close out the regular season.
