Box Score

Second year quarterback Simon Nassar (Toronto) led the Toronto Varsity Blues to a 40-26 win over the Waterloo Warriors as part of reunion 2012 at Warrior Field.  Nassar completed 22 of 29 passes for 291 yards with two touchdown passes and a rushing major in the win.

As a team the Varsity Blues put up 524 offensive yards to Waterloo's 325 to improve Toronto's record to 2-3, good for a tie for fifth spot with the Laurier Golden Hawks.  Waterloo drops to 1-4 on the season and sit in eighth spot in the OUA standings.

For the third straight home game the Warriors struck early as starting quarterback Brian Chris (Waterloo/) found Pickering, Ont., native Michael Robson (Pickering/) on the far sideline with Robson finding a lane into the end zone for the major.  The 48-yard strike gave Waterloo the early 7-0 lead.

Three minutes later however the Blues would even the score as rookie running back Ashton Nelson (Brampton, Ont.) put together multiple runs up field, capping off the drive with a 25-yard run for the touchdown.

Toronto would take their first lead of the game at the 1:27 minute mark of the first quarter on a 21-yard bullet by Nassar to wide receiver Alex Pierzchalski (London, Ont.).

Heading into the second quarter up 14-7, Toronto extended their lead on Nassar's second straight touchdown pass.  This time his target being Lukas Gavac (Mississauga, Ont.) on a 10-yard pass to give the Blues a 21-7 lead.

The Blues continued their offensive onslaught well through the second quarter to extend their lead to 30-7.  Following a conceded safety, Toronto would notch their fourth touchdown of the game with Stephan Boroniec (Mississauga, Ont.) marching it in from 1-yard.  The touchdown was set up by some trickery on the part of the Blues where punter/quarterback Marcus Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.) faked the kick while facing third down throwing the ball up field for the first down.

Before the end of the first half, Waterloo athlete of the week Harrison Mair (Vancouver/Vancouver College) intercepted an errand Nassar pass which would allow Waterloo to cut into the Toronto lead.  Jamie Cook (Collingwood/), who entered the game following an injury to Chris, led his team down field and handed the ball to Marco Visentin (Kentville/) who punched it in from 1-yard on third and one.

Toronto would add to their lead early in the second half as Nassar would call for the quarterback draw and zig zag his way 15 yards into the endzone to give his squad a 37-14 lead.  The major at 12:46 was the only scoring of the third quarter.

The fourth opened with a promising drive, once again led by Cook who delivered picture perfect passes to Paul Cecile (Azilda/) bringing Waterloo down to the red zone.  Unfortunately for the home side, Toronto put up a wall to stop the Warriors on another third and one attempt to keep the score locked at 37-14 for the Blues.

The two sides would exchange field goals before Waterloo made it interesting once again.  Cook found Cecile and Harrison Thomas (Oakville/) to bring the Warriors down to Toronto's 6-yard line where Visentin would catch a 6-yard screen pass for his second major of the game at the 5:54 mark.

The Warriors continued their strong defensive posture again on the next drive forcing Toronto the take the safety but could not muster any more offense in the final five minutes of the game falling in the end by a score of 40-26.

The 1-4 Warriors have a short week to prepare for the Laurier Golden Hawks (2-3) who are coming off a tight 22-19 loss to the Guelph Gryphons.  The cross-town rivals go to battle under the lights on Thursday, October 4 at University Stadium.  Kickoff is schedule for 7pm.  The Varsity Blues (2-3) return home to face the winless Ottawa Gee Gees (0-5) on Saturday, October 6 at 1pm.
