Comeback falls short as Warriors drop OUA quarter-final battle to Mustangs

On a cold and windy night at TD Waterhouse Stadium the Western Mustangs men's rugby team began their playoff schedule with an OUA Quarterfinal matchup against the Waterloo Warriors. Getting out to an early lead the Mustangs were able to hold off a resilient Warriors team in the second half to come away with a 17-12 victory.

Western's Mike Turnbull had another strong game, leading the team in scoring with seven points on two converts and one penalty goal. Waterloo's Alexander Pedjase (Waterloo/) led both teams in scoring with ten points on two tries.

James Ojo also had a strong game for the Mustangs including slicing through the Waterloo defence late in the first half to score the first try of the game on a run from about 25-yards out.

Ojo's try capped of a good first half for the Mustangs that saw them in control for the majority of the first 40 minutes often keeping play contained soundly in the Waterloo end.

The Warriors entered the second half down 10-0, however they didn't wait long to tighten up that gap, just pushing past the Mustangs defence to record the try from Pedjase. Matteo Schwartzentruber (Pembroke/) would add the convert to shrink the Western lead to three in the opening minutes of the second half.

Waterloo would continue to threaten the Western defence however the Mustangs struck back a few minutes later on a try from Charles Beatty that was set up by Turnbull. Turnbull narrowly missed a penalty goal from around 40-yards out but Beatty was able to fall on the loose ball and record the points for Western. Turnbull added the convert to once again give the Mustangs a 10-point lead.

The Warriors remained resilient, continuing to test the Mustangs defence before punching through with a try on the far side of the field to make it 17-12 Western with only a few minutes to play. Unfortunately for the Warriors a final late push was unsuccessful, giving Western the 17-12 victory.
