Men's rugby fall by one to Marauders

Game Summary

The Waterloo men's rugby team lost a thrilling match to the McMaster Marauders by only one point, 24-23 on Saturday afternoon at the CIF fields in Waterloo.

McMaster found themselves with some points to make up, after giving up 13 unanswered points. Waterloo's Ben Vandenburg would score the first try of the game for the Warriors and Zach Bogdon (Preston/) would connect for the convert, as well as two penalty goals.

But before the half was over, McMaster would find a way to get back within three with two tries, from Trevor Anderson (Toronto) and Cam Stones (Whitby, Ont.). The first half would end 13-10 in favour of the home team.

In the second, Andrew Ferguson (Mississauga, Ont.) would return to the lineup and make an impact, scoring a try and kicking for the extra two points to go up 17-13. The Marauders would extend their lead with Stones' second try of the day and Ferguson would make the convert

Bogdon would then kick for another penalty goal and the ball would go between the posts to put the Warriors down by four. Following that, Warrior Ian Blackie (Guelph/) would score a try but it wouldn't be enough for the home team to overtake the Marauders.

Bogdon led all players with 13 points, all coming off of kicks (2 conversions, 3 penalty goals).

The Warriors, who currently hold the sixth and final playoff spot with a 3-4 record, have the week off before playing their final regular season game in St. Catharines against the Brock Badgers on Saturday, October 27.
