Warriors open season with pair of draws against Guelph and York

Saturday, Sept. 3 vs. Guelph
Waterloo 1, Guelph 1

The Waterloo women's soccer team opened their season at home against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, September 3 earning a hard fought draw to pick up their first point of the season.

The game opened with the Warriors showing great ball control and putting pressure on the Gryphons defence.  Following some big saves by Gryphons keeper Alexandra Keddy (Mississauga, Ont.), Guelph would open the scoring in the final minute of the first half off the foot of Natalie Schott (Toronto, Ont.).

The second half opened with second year Warriors goalkeeper Lesia Bandura (Kitchener/) making timely saves to keep Waterloo within striking distance.

Inclement weather would roll in early in the second half sending both teams for cover which seemed to give Waterloo life.  The Warriors would come out firing following the rain delay and net the equalizer at the 85th minute with Kaitlyn Barnett (Kitchener/) scoring the first goal of the season for the black and gold and giving Waterloo the tie.

Next up for the Warriors (0-0-1) is a meeting with the York Lions (0-0-1) on Sunday, September 4.

Sunday, Sept. 4 vs. York
Waterloo 0, York 0

In the first ever varsity action on the new Warrior Field artificial surface, the Waterloo women's soccer team battled the York Lions to a 0-0 draw.

Waterloo and York took to the field both looking for their first win of the season but settled nothing at the end of 90 minutes as either squad was able to solve the keepers.

Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, Ont.) and Lesia Bandura (Kitchener/)  were brilliant all game long making save after save on the quick Warrior Field surface.  Bandura picked up her second draw of the season for Waterloo and showed she will be tough to beat throughout the 2011 season.

Next up for Waterloo (0-0-2) is a trip down the 401 to play the Windsor Lancers (1-1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 10.
