Women's soccer slip into playoffs; face Windsor Lancers in OUA playoffs

Friday, October 21 @ McMaster
McMaster 2, Waterloo 0

Waterloo's five game point streak came to an end on Friday night as they were shutout 2-0 by the mighty McMaster Marauders on Friday night in Hamilton.

In a scoreless first half, the Marauders dominated ball possession but couldn't find the back of the net.

In the second, the ball rarely crossed into McMaster's half as goal keeper Brittany Duffey (Markham, Ont.) went mostly untested throughout the match.

Around the 60th minute, McMaster would get a great chance from forward Natalie Brace (Warwickshire, England) from just outside the 18-yard box. On the free kick attempt, the exchange student would just miss the top right corner.

As play continued, the Marauders kept pushing for the first goal of the match. It finally came on a corner kick. McMaster midfielder Mel Van Der Hoop (Oakville, Ont.) connected with a Waterloo Warrior and the away team would score on themselves. Van Der Hoop would get accredited with the goal in the 77th minute.

Ten minutes after, as the match was wrapping up, Brace would be in perfect position of a cross from Julia Maiolino (North York, Ont.) and would put one in the back of the net, sealing McMaster's eighth win of the 2011 season.  With the loss Waterloo dropped to 3-6-4 on the season and need either a tie or a Western loss to clinch a playoff berth.

Sunday, October 23 @ Guelph
Guelph 3, Waterloo 1

The Warriors lost their second straight match falling to the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the new Gryphon Soccer Complex.  Despite the loss, the Warriors still qualified for the playoffs as the York Lions did Waterloo a favour defeating the Western Mustangs 3-0 to give Waterloo their first playoff berth since 2008.

The Gryphons had a good start to the first half, with five shots on net in the first fifteen minutes of the match. Close attempts were made by Jenny Dunn (Vancouver, BC) and rookie Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, ON), but both were stopped by Warrior goal-keep Lesia Bandura (Kitchener/) (Kitchener, ON).

Dunn continued to have shots on net, one which in the 22nd minute reflected right off the cross-bar. The Gryphons first goal of the game came from Heather Kendall (Newmarket, ON) in the 23rd minute when she ripped the ball into the back of the Warrior's net before Bandura even had a chance.

The Warriors responded in the 33rd minute when Adrienne Goldsworthy (Waterloo/) (Waterloo, ON) tied up the game after a free-kick was given outside the penalty box.

The second half didn't see much action until Kendall added the second goal of the game for the Gryphons during the 65th minute after she fired the ball out of Bandura's reach.  Erica Bain (Niagara Falls, ON) secured Guelph's victory with a third goal in the 72nd minute, and nearly added a fourth to the board in the last minutes of the game but Bandura cut off the attack.

Waterloo finished in the sixth and final playoff spot with 13 points and will face the Windsor Lancers on the road in OUA playoff action.  The game is set for Wednesday, October 26 at 7pm on Alumni Field in Windsor.
