Warriors lose opener, show promise

Sunday, September 5, 2010
Laurier 3, Waterloo 1

The Warriors kicked off their 2010 regular season at home with a loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-1. The young Warrior squad looked poised for the first goal with some early pressure but were unable to put one past second year goalie Tristin Vogel (Collingwood, ON).
Following a scoreless first half, the Hawks potted the first goal of the game as first year midfielder Amanda Mithrush (Thunder Bay, Ont.) put one past the Warriors rookie goalkeeper Lesia Bandura (Kitchener/) (Kitchener, ON). Midfielder Tara Chadwick (Stratford/) (Stratford, ON) would quickly tie up the game notching the first goal of the season for the Warriors.

Unable to hold off the powerful Golden Hawks for much longer, Waterloo surrendered two more goals late in the second half. Former Warrior Kelsey Abbott (Waterloo, ON) was credited with the winning goal while Mithrush found the net for the second time of the game.

Player of the match for Waterloo was goalkeeper Lesia Bandura (Kitchener/) who showed she can compete with the best and make timely saves when called upon.

The Warriors who showed promise in their opening match (0-1-0) travel to Guelph on Saturday, September 11 to face the Gryphons (1-1-0) who are off to a solid start. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm. Waterloo returns home the next day (Sept. 12) to host the McMaster Marauders (0-1-1) at the CIF Fields.
